Smells Fishy? Aquatic Ingredients: The Next Food Frontier
Seaweed, algae, and aquatic plants are rising stars in the food world, poised to be major players by 2025. These ingredients aren’t just trendy; they provide valuable protein alternatives as the demand for sustainable and nutritious foods grows. According to the article, seaweed alone is “high in essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and iodine, making it a strong contender in plant-based diets” (Plant Based News). As more companies embrace aquatic ingredients, the link between veganism and eco-friendly food choices strengthens, promoting both health and environmental sustainability.

These botanicals are aimed at providing anti-aging and radiance-boosting benefits while supporting the shift toward clean beauty. Givaudan notes that their extracts “help elevate the make-up experience with a natural and holistic approach” (Cosmetics Business). As the beauty industry moves toward more plant-based innovations, it aligns with the broader trend of sustainable living and veganism, encouraging consumers to choose ethical beauty solutions.

Over 1,200 Health Pro’s Call for Plant-Based Meals in UK Hospitals
More than 1,200 health professionals and 24 organizations are urging the NHS to adopt plant-based meals as the default option in hospitals across the UK. Their argument is simple: offering healthier, sustainable meals could improve patient outcomes and combat the climate crisis. According to the group, “Plant-based diets have been proven to lower the risk of many chronic diseases,” reinforcing the push for hospitals to lead by example in promoting plant-based living.
Is Nature’s Carbon Sink Breaking Down?
New research shows alarming signs that natural carbon sinks are losing their ability to absorb CO2, threatening climate targets. In 2023, Earth’s forests, plants, and soils absorbed almost no carbon, a stark shift in global carbon regulation. This collapse could accelerate global warming beyond current predictions. Andrew Watson of Exeter University warns, “We’re seeing cracks in the resilience of the Earth’s systems.” With deforestation and rising temperatures, relying solely on nature to combat emissions is no longer viable for climate goals.
Kernza: The Perennial Grain Revolutionizing Agriculture
Kernza, a perennial wheat-like crop, is emerging as a potential part of the solution for agriculture. Developed over 20 years, it produces multiple harvests without the need for replanting, helping to reduce carbon emissions and protect topsoil. As a more sustainable alternative to traditional crops like wheat, Kernza locks carbon in the soil and supports biodiversity. Despite its ecological benefits, challenges remain, including limited yields and high costs, slowing its widespread adoption. I’m sure it will be fine if we don’t feed it to animals!

“Quitting Dairy Changed My Life” … (surprisingly profoundly!)
From the very first few days of your life the imagery is all around you. Glasses of whiter than white milk and happy cows enjoying a charmed life in lush green fields. So when you hear more and more people saying things like “quitting dairy changed my life” there is a natural disconnect there. If cow’s milk is so good …
Thanks so much for reading Vegan Slate and have a non-violent day 🙂
