Fi Europe Awards 2024: Recognising Plant-Based Innovation & Variety
The 2024 Fi Europe Innovation Awards spotlight a significant rise in plant-based and food tech innovations, underscoring humanity’s gradual shift toward more ethical food choices. This year’s awards feature pioneering entries committed to sustainable and cruelty-free solutions that aim to minimize environmental impact. These advancements reflect an evolving consciousness, with industry leaders “creating solutions to help improve lives and protect the planet,” echoing a dedication to making food production healthier and more humane.
Lidl Expands Plant-Based Range to Meet Growing Demand for Ethical Eating
Lidl GB has introduced its Vemondo Plant! line, a major expansion of plant-based offerings driven by increased customer demand. The 28 new items include tofu, burgers, plant-based sausages, and dairy-free alternatives at affordable prices, with some options starting as low as £1.75. Lidl aims for plant-based protein to represent 25% of its total protein sales by 2030, aligning with the EAT-Lancet’s goals for sustainable food systems. Lidl’s Chief Commercial Officer said, “we’re making high-quality plant-based foods accessible to everyone.”
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable, ethical food choices, bridging affordability and eco-consciousness.
“Vegan Bodybuilder Claims Mr. Olympia Brazil Title, Redefining Strength and Plant-Based Power”
Guilherme Abomai’s historic win as Super Heavyweight Champion at Mr. Olympia Brazil has sparked a shift in bodybuilding, proving plant-based diets can support elite strength. Transitioning to veganism three years ago for health reasons, Abomai has shown that a balanced, plant-based diet can optimize both performance and recovery. His win challenges conventional beliefs, illustrating how “plant-based foods can fuel peak athletic performance.”
This achievement highlights veganism’s role in ethical, sustainable living while paving the way for other plant-based athletes.
Celebrities Cashing In: Vegan Becomes Hollywood’s Latest Profit Grab
Celebrity brands like Harry Styles’ Pleasing and Selena Gomez’s Serendipity are capitalising on the vegan trend, cleverly marketed as eco-friendly and ethical. With their influence, stars are repackaging veganism to profit from a growing demand for sustainable products. CEO Today notes that these brands make veganism “a powerful force in pop culture,” but for some, it’s hard to ignore that Hollywood’s ever more green image also generates another type of green!
As the vegan movement grows, many question whether this is advocacy or just smart marketing. I know where I sit on that one!
West Hollywood Embraces the Plant-Based Treaty
On a more positive celebrity note, The City of West Hollywood has taken a bold step in environmental advocacy by endorsing the Plant-Based Treaty, an initiative that addresses climate change through food system reform. With unanimous support, this endorsement aligns with the city’s commitment to “mitigating climate impacts caused by animal agriculture.” West Hollywood joins a growing list of cities worldwide adopting plant-forward policies to reduce their carbon footprint.
Officials highlight the treaty as a way to promote plant-based living, which could help curb emissions, conserve resources, and improve public health. Advocates stress that tackling the climate crisis requires a transformation in food consumption and production—a sentiment shared by the city’s council, who see it as a model for sustainable urban policy.
Wildlife on the Edge: New Report Warns of Alarming Biodiversity Decline
Wildlife populations worldwide have plummeted by 73% over the last 50 years, according to the latest Living Planet report by WWF and ZSL. Latin America and the Caribbean saw the steepest drop, with an average loss of 95%. Scientists warn that ecosystems globally are reaching “points of no return,” putting both nature and human society at risk. Matthew Gould from ZSL states, “We are dangerously close to tipping points for nature loss and climate change.” While alarming, experts emphasize that with immediate action, nature can still recover.
The report highlights that land-use change—often linked to food production—remains the main cause. Shifting to plant-based diets could lessen agriculture’s environmental toll, helping wildlife and ecosystems alike.

It’s all to do with honey, Sandi Toksvig and migratory beekeeping. Vegan hypocrisy of the first order or an intentional muddying of the waters? Is Opposing Migratory Beekeeping Vegan Hypocrisy? It is claimed …
