About Us

My Story

Hey, I’m Rohan and welcome to my website!

I’m a relative newcomer to veganism but have embraced the lifestyle wholeheartedly! I had been a vegetarian for 20 years before going the whole hog (excuse the turn of phrase!) so I was already half-way there. The catalyst for me was when my wife showed me some YouTube videos explaining how the dairy industry is at least as cruel as the factory farming meat producers. In fact, some would argue it’s even more cruel. I don’t want to get into too much of that here since there are many places you can go online to educate yourself in this regard.

I want to focus more on positives here. Going vegan was the best thing I ever did and for me, it was the single most important thing I could do to ensure I have as little effect as possible when it comes to the cruelty animals face on a daily basis, in more ways than one can imagine. The best thing you can do as a consumer is to vote with your wallet. The market only exists because the demand is there.

It makes me happy to think about the fact that every day I’m making a stand against the horrific cruelty humans perpetrate across the globe on many species of animals. I know there’s too much human suffering in the world as well but that doesn’t mean we can forget about the animals and the suffering they face.

So, 6 years in to it and I’ve never looked back. There is absolutely no reason why you cannot go vegan, healthily. There are plenty of unhealthy vegans, especially with the rise of veganism and vegan options which are not necessarily all that good for you! Focus on fresh fruit and vegetables and you can’t go all that wrong. Yes, there are some specific dietary requirements which you should be aware of. Vitamin D is one and Omega 3 fatty acids is another.

Go Vegan – Healthily!

If you’re reading this then it’s highly likely you’re already vegan. If not, then I can absolutely recommend it with all my heart. I want to help you in your journey and I feel I have enough experience to offer you help when it comes to staying healthy and adopting the vegan lifestyle.

People decide to go vegan for many reasons and many assume that switching to ‘meat free’ alternatives to their previous diet will suffice. It’s best not to assume the vegan alternatives are inherently healthy. There is a whole load of vegan junk food on offer these days as the market has exploded over the last few years. As I said above, if your focus is on fresh veg and fruit you’ll be on the right track.

No need to completely exclude the junk. We all like a blow out every now and then! But limit the ‘alternatives’ and eat fresh veg, preferably organic, if you can and pay attention to the supplements you’ll need to stay healthy.

Navigating The Sometimes Choppy Waters!

It’s not always easy trying to live a vegan lifestyle. We all have our moments, our waverings. I’ve questioned my choice many times but every single time, the thought of going back to drinking pints of cow’s milk every day and munching on cheese and salad sandwiches at lunchtime … it is just in no way appealing to me any more.

… and I haven’t eaten meat for so long now (26 years!) I’ve honestly forgotten what it tastes like πŸ™‚ But, again, I never crave it!

So yeah, 6 years into veganism and I’m feeling the need to give back a little. I love to write and this site is just my personal take; my offerings borne from my experiences thus far. I’d like to think you’ll get honest answers from me here at Vegan Slate. I’d love to build this into a little community where we can all bounce off each other and help out where we can.

We need more empathy and compassion in this increasingly crazy world we find ourselves living in. We need to help each other through this because before the light bulb goes off in your head, you’re so far down the rabbit hole you’re not even aware there is an alternative! Veganism is a lifestyle, not just a diet. It is an alternative.

I felt like I’d ‘cleared the slate’ going vegan … and so Vegan Slate is born. Enjoy!

If you ever need a helping hand or have any questions whatsoever, please do get in touch and I will do my very best to help you out.

All the best,

Rohan,
