The Rise of Plant-Based Diets: Health and Sustainability in Focus
A shift towards plant-based diets is being driven by health, environmental, and ethical concerns. The growing interest is tied to benefits like reduced heart disease risk and lower environmental impact. With animal welfare in mind, many are turning to plant-based options. As yet more evidence of the paradigm shift, this article from industry rag, Supermarket News, emphasises the importance of making small, manageable changes to transition smoothly. As highlighted, “adopting a plant-based diet is not only good for personal health but also for the planet.
Countryside Alliance Uses Right-Wing News Media In Vegan School Meals Row
In a twist that’ll surprise absolutely no one, the Countryside Alliance briefed only reporters from The Daily Fail and GB News to push back against Dale Vince’s vegan school meals proposal. The Alliance, as expected, is rallying against removing meat and dairy from school menus. They insist, “parents, not activists, should decide what their children eat.” But when your only mouthpieces are tabloids and GBeebies, maybe the message isn’t as strong as you think.
Natural Scientific’s New Line of Supplements Shakes Up the Market
Natural Scientific has launched 20 all-natural supplements, aiming to make waves in the U.S. wellness scene. These products, which include plant-based alternatives like Vegan Vitamins D3 & K2, emphasize transparency and sustainability. The company promises clean, cruelty-free ingredients with scientific backing, setting a higher standard for ethical supplements. Worth a quick mention is the lichen-sourced D3, described as “harnessing the power of nature without harming it”. For those interested in plant-based living, these vegan supplements offer a responsible choice that aligns with animal rights values.
Blended Meat Gains Traction, but Vegans Remain Skeptical
A new study shows 74% of American consumers are interested in trying blended meat—products mixing meat with plant-based ingredients. While the news may not sit well with die-hard vegans, it’s a step toward reducing meat consumption. Blended meat burgers outperformed both plant-based and conventional meat options, suggesting that for many, baby steps like these might be how we get closer to a plant-based future. But will this approach lead to lasting change, or just slow progress?
Celebrate Autumn at the Tolhurst Squash and Pumpkin Festival
Join the Tolhurst Squash & Pumpkin Festival on October 20, 2024, for a day of fun and organic celebration at the historic Victorian walled garden on Hardwick Estate. The 10th edition of this family-friendly event offers everything from a giant pumpkin competition to local food stalls featuring organic produce. Expect children’s entertainment, live music, and plenty of autumn vibes.
This festival also gives you a rare opportunity to explore a working veganic farm, a model of animal-free, plant-based farming. As the hosts say, it’s a chance to see “first-hand a working Stockfree Organic farm” and to appreciate a more sustainable approach to agriculture. Come along and support the shift to plant-based living. It’s environmentally friendly and promotes animal welfare. The vegan ethos of kinder farming.
RSPCA Assured Scheme Misleading Animal Lovers?
If you’re not on Vegan FTA’s mailing list yet, I can highly recommend it for grass-roots vegan updates. They have joined over 170 organisations and individuals urging the RSPCA to reconsider its controversial RSPCA Assured scheme. Critics argue that the scheme fails to adequately protect farmed animals and misleads the public into thinking cruelty-free farming exists. Prominent figures like Ricky Gervais, Brian May, Moby and Bryan Adams have signed an open letter calling for the scheme to be dropped and for a transition to a plant-based future.
The movement is in response to more than 40 investigations revealing disturbing levels of suffering in RSPCA Assured farms. A BAFTA-winning filmmaker, Alex Lockwood, highlights these issues in a three-minute film. As the letter states, the RSPCA must “stand up for all animals, and not stand for cruelty.” It’s becoming ever more clear that moving towards a plant-based future is a big way to address this issue, offering a kinder, more sustainable alternative to animal farming.

Do Horses Feel Pain When You Ride Them?
I’m writing this not long after the 2023 Grand National horse race in the UK because, for some reason, the gruesome spectacle touched me even more so than usual. It’s obvious these animals are pushed to painful limits at events like this but I started wondering, do horses feel pain when you ride them in ‘normal’ situations? Well, it turns …
Thanks so much for reading Vegan Slate and have a non-violent day 🙂
