NURA Debuts a Novel Vegan Protein Alternative
NURA has introduced YESTEIN®, a new vegan yeast protein, poised to shake up the plant-based protein market. This ingredient is not only allergen-free but also boasts a complete amino acid profile, making it a strong contender against traditional proteins. NURA is pushing the boundaries of innovation with this sustainable option, which they claim has “minimal environmental impact.” This move is a significant step towards making plant-based diets more accessible and nutritious. Veganism isn’t just about ethics—it’s about smart, sustainable choices that benefit our health and the planet.
U.S. Heat-Related Deaths Surge Amid Relentless Rising Temperatures
A new JAMA report reveals a staggering 117% increase in heat-related deaths in the U.S. since 1999, with over 21,500 deaths linked to extreme heat. The study highlights the growing impact of climate change, with a sharp rise in fatalities after 2016. Researchers warn that “the recent increasing trend is likely to continue,” urging local authorities to expand access to hydration centers and cooling facilities. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains crucial to mitigating these deadly heatwaves. Plant-based lifestyles will, of course, play a big part in the transition to net-zero.
China & UK Championing The Global Shift Towards Plant-Based Diets
China and the UK are at the forefront of the global movement towards meat alternatives, driven by environmental concerns and shifting consumer preferences. The plant-based market is booming, with China focusing on sustainability, while the UK sees a surge in demand for innovative meat-free products. As the world pivots away from traditional meat consumption, the implications for health, the environment, and animal rights are profound. This trend signals a significant shift in global dietary habits. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey!
KMC Unveils Promising Potato Starch for Plant-Based Confectionery
KMC has introduced Gelamyl 625, a new potato-based ingredient offering exceptional elasticity and energy-efficient processing, revolutionizing plant-based confectionery. With a lower drying temperature and versatile texture options, Gelamyl 625 gives manufacturers the ability to create indulgent, sustainable treats while cutting down on energy costs. As Peter Buchreitz Thesbjerg from KMC notes, this innovation allows for the replacement of animal-derived gelatin, making it a significant step forward for plant-based candy.
Vegan Society Criticizes UK Government’s Pro-Meat Campaign
The Vegan Society has strongly condemned a UK government-backed meat campaign as “irresponsible propaganda,” arguing that it ignores the growing evidence of plant-based diets’ benefits. They highlight concerns over the campaign’s potential to mislead the public on health and environmental impacts. “Promoting meat consumption without considering the consequences is deeply irresponsible,” the society states, pushing for more government support for plant-based alternatives as a healthier, sustainable choice for the future.
UK Leads Alternative Protein Innovation with £38M Centre
The UK is set to lead the way in alternative protein research with the launch of the £38 million National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC). Co-led by the James Hutton Institute, this initiative aims to develop sustainable alternatives to animal proteins, including cultured meat and insect-based proteins. Prof Anwesha Sarkar of Leeds University highlights that the centre will address challenges like market complexity, consumer acceptance, and the impact on farmers’ livelihoods, aiming to position the UK as a global leader in this emerging sector.
